Tulum was the major port for the Coba pre-Columbian Maya civilization. Formerly called Zama, City of Dawn (it faces the sunrise). An important trade hub, especially for obsidian.
First mentioned by Juan Díaz, a member of Spanish expedition of 1518.
Tulum was occupied from around AD 1200 till the beginning of the 16th century.
The ruins of Tulum are situated along the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico.
