In Jacques Tourneur’s haunt­ing 1947 film noir Out of the Past, Robert Mitchum’s for­mer pri­vate inves­ti­ga­tor, Jeff Bai­ley, liv­ing qui­et­ly in Bridge­port, Cal­i­for­nia, is forced to con­front his past when sum­moned by his dan­ger­ous ex-employ­er (Kirk Dou­glas) to Lake Tahoe.
